Designed Against Cheaters

When designing A Life In Purgatory, the goal wasn't just to make a party game that fixes traditional trivia by adding bluffing, strategy, and replayability. The goal was to build a high-quality, tightly balanced card game where players could explore loopholes, discover technicalities, and build deep strategies—without the ability to cheat or collude their way to victory.

In many social deduction or bluffing games, subtle physical tells, group "bandwagoning", or secret teaming can quickly derail a session. Here is a look behind the scenes at how physical product design and game mechanics were engineered to keep the playing field completely fair.

Card Layout & The "Eye-Tracking" Trap

Have you ever played a bluffing game where you could tell someone was lying simply because their eyes lingered on a specific corner of the card? We noticed this early in development.

To eliminate physical reading "tells," text on A Life In Purgatory cards was intentionally positioned so players cannot decipher whether someone is reading a true statement or crafting a lie based on where their eyes are directed on the card. Whether you are selecting a real fact on a Fact or Lie card, picking an alternative word on a Headline Quote, or reading a topic prompt for Fact or Lie About, your visual focus remains in the exact same place.

Simultaneous, Unchangeable Voting

Collusion often happens in real-time when players wait to see how others vote before committing their own opinion. A Life In Purgatory eliminates "bandwagoning" through a locked-in voting structure:

  • Face-Down Placement: When a player finishes reading their card, every opponent must play their Lie or Truth indicator card face-down into the centre of the table.

  • No Take-Backs: Once your indicator card touches the middle, it cannot be changed or retrieved.

  • Simultaneous Reveal: All cards are flipped over at the exact same time to determine the majority verdict.

This guarantees that every player must commit to their verdict independently without taking cues from table dynamics or signal-flashing teammates.

Strict Delivery Restrictions

In games where players can talk endlessly to defend themselves, louder players often dominate or use insider jokes/signals to clue in specific allies.

We shut this down directly in the rulebook: when reading a Purgatory card, you must not say anything beyond what is written on the card, and you are strictly forbidden from offering follow-up arguments or trying to convince the room after reading. You state your card type (Fact or Lie, Headline Quote, or Fact or Lie About), deliver the statement, and let the room judge. This keeps turn pacing fast and completely eliminates verbal side-channel communication.

Total Physical Transparency & Ghost Voters

Ambiguity is the enemy of fair play. Two specific design choices keep game state tracking 100% transparent:

  • Wooden Heart Tokens for Health: Instead of relying on tracking sheets, dials, or mental math, health is represented by physical life tokens matching the heart count on your character card. At any glance, every player knows exact life totals across the board.

  • Active Eliminated Players: Even when a player loses all their life tokens and is eliminated from winning standard play, they are not removed from table mechanics. Eliminated players must continue playing an indicator card every turn. This keeps eliminated players actively engaged while preventing them from quietly kingmaking or forming side alliances off-turn.

Engineered for Endless Replayability

By pairing high-grade physical components—from custom character cards to tangible tokens—with tightly tuned anti-cheat mechanics, A Life In Purgatory delivers a competitive experience where victories are earned purely through sharp strategy, bold bluffs, and smart card plays.
